Grays Harbor Lighthouse

Who does not love light houses? They're the stuff of lore going back to ancient times, coastal phalli protecting seamen. We have one just south of here in Westport, and I couldn't resist using it in an art project. In what is an effort-intensive process, I do a digital illustration which I have printed on canvas. Then I get out a pot o' glue and collage it. For collage papers I used paint pouring skins, gelli prints, and alcohol ink work. Paper toweling is scrunching for slips of cloud. For this one I also used magazine paper. I'm an alcohol ink fangrrl, and love using it to adjust hues as needed, similar to how you might make adjustments in photoshop. It's rare for me to do a straight landscape project, but I enjoyed it as a warmup as I try to ease back in to work as a maker.

When I finish my work for the day I usually prop it up across the room to review. It helps me view the work for composition and other elements. When you are creating images from collage papers, the closeup work can seem nearly abstract. But pull away, and the image you'd planned magically emerges.

And no, this isn't the final photo, just a quickie to show you where I'm at. 18x24" mixed media on stretched canvas.
